Artist Statement
My
art work is derived from East Asian Brush Painting, known as
"sumi-e". This art form consists of applying black ink and
watercolor on rice paper, using special brushes, producing disciplined
strokes typical of the paintings seen in
traditional Asian
calligraphy, landscapes, flower and animal paintings. I have
always been attracted to the grace and delicacy of this
style.
Many of the paintings project a spontaneous energy in the brush strokes
with a minimal use of line, most often leaving some unpainted areas on
the paper as a kind of calm "breathing space" for the viewer.
This contributes to the reason that many people experience sumi--e as a
relaxing, meditative and at times spiritual, form of art.
Sumi-e has influenced many Western artists including the impressionists
and more contemporary painters such as Franz Kline, Brice Marden and
Jackson Pollock, who has written of his early love of painting on
Japanese hand made paper.
In my travels to China, Japan and Thailand I have discovered varieties
of handmade papers with distinctive textures, color and
density.
The fascinating effects produced when working with these papers, as
they absorb the ink and color, intrigue me. This genre
affords
the exciting opportunity to integrate my love of traditional brush
painting with my own personal artistic inclinations. As I
have
gradually developed sufficient freedom from the strict requirements of
the East Asian tradition to experiment, play with ideas and fuse
spontaneity with practiced discipline, I have been directed
toward discovery of my own particular style. My paintings
tend
toward abstraction rather than literal depiction, suggestion rather
than representation. Recently I have added collage as an
effective method of using my precious papers. Working at my
art
is a constant process of discovery, challenge and deep pleasure.
It
has been gratifying to have my work shown in a number of juried gallery
exhibitions, resulting in several awards, including the "Best
In
Show" prize in the 2007 Annual Sumi-e Society of America
Exhibition, and "Award of Excellence" in the 2008 Member's
Art
Forum of the Smithtown Arts Council in New York. I have also
been
granted three solo gallery shows in the last several years
and am honored to have my work represented in
private
collections.
