Artist Bio/statement

My interest in painting began in the 1980's when I enrolled in a course on East Asian Brush painting, called Sumi-e. I had always been attracted to the grace and delicacy of that genre, as seen in Japanese, Chinese and Korean art. I loved the use of black ink combined with watercolor on handmade paper to characterize the essence of the subjects depicted. Many of the paintings projected a spontaneous energy in the brush strokes with a minimal use of line, leaving space on the paper as a kind of calm "breathing space" for the viewer. This contributes to the reason that many people experience sumi-e as a relaxing, at times spiritual, form of art.

The art of Sumi-e (a Japanese word meaning "ink painting") has been credited with influencing many Western artists including the impressionists as well as more contemporary painters such as Franz Kline, Brice Marden and Jackson Pollock, who indeed has written about
his early love of painting on Japanese hand made paper with it's diverse range of absorbing the ink and color, producing fascinating artistic effects.

Since I was busily engaged in my career as a psychotherapist I did not follow up on this interest until about 5 years ago when I made the time to resume the study of Sumi-e. This has added immeasurably to joy and fulfillment in my life as I have discovered deeper dimensions through art.

In my paintings I almost exclusively present abstraction rather than literal depiction, as I find great pleasure in trying to project essence rather than photographic representation. In painting I experience a satisfying intuitive freedom of expression combined with utilizing the learned discipline of controlling brushstrokes, ink, water and color. I view my way of working as a kind of "middle ground" between pure abstraction and a style that often communicates a sense of suggestion, producing paintings of abstract qualities but which may be interpreted variously, depending on the unique perception of the viewer.

The overarching quality that I strive for in my painting is communicating a sense of movement, or energy, known in Chinese as "Chi". I consider this the most challenging aspect of the work. I have been invited to exhibit my work in galleries as well as having paintings represented in private collections, and have also been fortunate in winning a number of prizes in juried exhibitions, including "Best of Show" in the 2007 National Sumi-e Society annual exhibition. These recognitions have contributed enormous support and confidence-building in my ongoing strivings as an artist.
